Your resume gets an average of 6 seconds of attention from a recruiter. Before that, it has to pass through an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) that automatically rejects 75% of applications. Here's how to beat both filters.
The Format That Works
Forget creative designs, colorful templates, and multi-column layouts. ATS systems can't parse them, and recruiters find them harder to scan. Use a clean, single-column layout with clear section headers: Summary, Skills, Experience, Projects, Education.
The Skills Section
This is where most freshers go wrong. Don't list 'MS Office' or 'Team Player'. List specific technical skills that match the job description:
- Programming: Java, Python, JavaScript, SQL
- Frameworks: Spring Boot, React, Django
- Tools: Git, Docker, AWS, Jenkins
- Databases: MySQL, MongoDB, PostgreSQL
Projects Matter More Than GPA
For freshers and career switchers, your projects section is your most powerful weapon. For each project, include:
**Project name** and one-line description
**Tech stack** used
**Your specific contribution** (not just 'built a website')
**Impact metrics** if possible ('reduced load time by 40%')
**GitHub link** to the code
